In June and July the Health Quality & Safety Commission, through the Open for better care campaign asked members of perioperative teams to complete a survey about the World Health Organization (WHO) surgical safety checklist and its use in their operating theatres.
The survey asked a range of questions relating to the engagement of staff when completing the three steps of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist. Responses indicate that the checklist is being used in the majority of surgical cases, however its use is not universal or consistent, and participation across professional groups varies significantly.
