The focus of the Open for better care campaign from April to end September 2014 was reducing harm from surgery. The Commission’s Safe Surgery NZ programme is ongoing, while the campaign highlighted surgical harm key messages.

The topic launched in the week of 14 April. District health boards (DHBs) and private providers were encouraged to hold local/regional launches for the topic.

There were a range of activities and resources throughout the six-month focus, associated with key interventions to reduce harm from surgery.

The campaign team worked closely with the Safe Surgery NZ team, DHB perioperative harm champions and regional campaign groups to determine which promotions DHBs and private providers would like to take part in.

For more information about reducing surgical harm, see the Safe Surgery NZ section of the Health Quality & Safety Commission’s website.
