Reducing harm from surgical site infections (SSI) was the second area of focus for the Open for better care campaign.
In April 2014, the campaign shifted its focus from reducing SSI risk to reducing perioperative harm. Although the Open campaign focus changed, the SSI Improvement (SSII) Programme and its national work to prevent harm caused to patients by SSIs continued as usual. Information about the SSII Programme can be found on the Commission’s website.

Early on, it was recognised clinical leadership was crucial for communicating and engaging with front line health care workers, senior managers and consumers, and spreading change. -
