The perioperative harm focus of Open for better care has had a great amount of exposure in the media during the focus period from April–September 2014.

In May 2014, 3News featured a story on its Firstline show about the importance of using the surgical safety checklist. The clip and associated media release are available on the TV3 news website. The Auckland School of Medicine Simulation Centre and the Health Quality & Safety Commission's Open for better care campaign coordinated the surgical simulation for TV3 to raise awareness of the surgical safety checklist, as part of the campaign’s focus on reducing perioperative harm.

In the August edition of Medspeak, (a newsletter of the New Zealand Medical Association) Dr Don Mackie, the Chief Medical Officer at the Ministry of Health discusses the risks posed to patients from VTE. The article promotes the use of the patient resource Blood Clots and You developed by Southern Cross Hospitals with funding support from the Commission.
