The Commission’s Safe Surgery NZ programme is ongoing, while the campaign highlighted surgical harm key messages from April to end September 2014.

Launch activities 

DHBs and other providers were encouraged to have regional or DHB launches of the surgery campaign topic. Some suggested launch activities and activities for the rest of April can be found here. As always, it was over to regions to choose which approach worked best for the region/DHB.

Monthly focus

Each month had a different focus:.

• April: launch, case for change
• May: teamwork and communication – checklist
• June: teamwork and communication – briefing and debriefing
• July: improving VTE, risk assessment
• August: appropriate VTE prophylaxis
• September: celebrating success
